What Does ‘Provably Fair’ Actually Mean?

1%House edge a provably fair check does not remove, Stake OriginalsVERIFIED

"Provably fair" is a cryptographic method that lets you verify a game's result was not changed after you placed your bet. It combines a server seed, a client seed and a nonce, with a hash published before the round so the outcome can be checked afterward. It proves the result was not manipulated, but it does not remove the house edge, which stays at about 1% on the 99% RTP Stake Originals.

The three ingredients

Provably fair systems rest on three values. The server seed is a secret value generated by the casino. The client seed is a value tied to you, often editable in your account or supplied by your browser. The nonce is a counter that increments with each round, so the same seed pair produces a different result every bet. Together these three inputs are combined to compute each outcome.

How verification works

The key step is commitment. Before any bets are placed, the casino publishes a cryptographic hash of the server seed. A hash is a one-way fingerprint: it locks in the server seed without revealing it, so the operator cannot change that seed later without the hash no longer matching. You then place your bets, with the nonce advancing each round. When you rotate or end the seed, the casino reveals the original server seed. You can confirm it matches the published hash, then recompute every result yourself using the server seed, client seed and nonce.

Because you can edit the client seed and replay the maths, you can satisfy yourself that outcomes were fixed at bet time and not altered to your disadvantage. This transparency is a defining feature of provably fair Originals like Plinko and Dice.

What it proves

Provably fair proves integrity. Specifically, it shows that the result of each round was determined by the committed seeds and nonce, not chosen after you bet, and not selectively altered by the operator once it saw your wager. If the revealed server seed matches the earlier hash and your recomputation reproduces the outcomes, the game behaved exactly as advertised for those rounds.

What it does not do

Provably fair is not the same as “no house edge.” A game can be fully provably fair and still carry its built-in advantage, such as the roughly 1% edge typical of Stake-style Originals. Fairness here means the outcomes were not tampered with, not that the odds favour you. The expected value of play remains negative over the long run. Verification also only covers the randomness of results; it does not audit the operator’s wider business, payouts or licensing. Treat provably fair as proof of an honest draw, not as a reason to expect profit.

Next step: once the concept is clear, our guide to the Aviator fairness breakdown walks through the actual server-seed check.

Quick answers

Does provably fair mean I will win more? No. It proves results were not manipulated. The house edge and negative expected value still apply.

What is the hash for? It commits the casino to the server seed before betting, so the seed cannot be changed afterward without detection.

Can I really check the results myself? Yes. After the server seed is revealed you can match it to the hash and recompute each round from the seeds and nonce.
