The Real Odds of Plinko: We Did the Math on Every Drop

99%Plinko RTPVERIFIED

On 16-row high-risk Plinko, the ball lands in a 0.2x slot about 79% of the time, meaning you lose 80% of your stake on roughly 4 out of every 5 drops, while the headline 1,000x multiplier appears only about once every 32,768 drops. We calculated the exact probability of every outcome, and it confirms the game's ~99% RTP is real but carried almost entirely by rare edge hits.

Plinko 16-row landing probability distribution chart

Note: Stake has since raised its top Plinko multiplier to 10,000x. That changes the prize on the outermost slot, not its odds, the top slot is still reached only about 1 in 32,768 drops because the geometry of a 16-row board is unchanged. The analysis below uses the classic 1,000x payout table, which still applies to BGaming’s Plinko and was Stake’s earlier structure.

This is original analysis: Plinko’s board is a Galton board, so the slot a ball lands in follows a binomial distribution. For a 16-row board there are 216 = 65,536 equally likely left/right paths. We computed the exact probability of each multiplier and cross-checked it with a 2,000,000-drop simulation.

What the math actually shows

  • The 99% RTP is genuine. Summing every multiplier × its probability gives a return of 98.98%, matching Plinko’s published ~99% RTP.
  • But ~79% of drops lose money on high risk (a 0.2x slot returns just 20% of your stake). The return is “real” only across a huge number of drops.
  • Chasing the 1,000x is expensive. At one in 32,768, you’d wager about $32,768 (at $1/drop) to expect a single $1,000 hit. The math is against the chase even at 99% RTP.
  • Risk level changes this shape, not the return. Lower risk spreads the 99% across frequent small wins; high risk concentrates it in rare edges. Same RTP, very different ride.

How we calculated it (methodology)

Each of the 16 rows sends the ball left or right with equal 50% probability, so the final slot (0-16) follows a binomial distribution: the probability of slot k is C(16, k) ÷ 65,536. We multiplied each slot’s probability by its multiplier on the standard 16-row high-risk table to get the expected return (98.98%), then ran a 2,000,000-drop Monte Carlo simulation, which reproduced the same ~1-in-32,768 rate for the 1,000x. No estimates, just the underlying probability.

Quick answers

What are the odds of the top slot in Plinko (1,000x classic, 10,000x on Stake’s current board)? About 1 in 32,768 per drop on 16-row high risk (~0.003%).

How often do you lose on high-risk Plinko? Around 79% of drops land in a 0.2x slot, returning only 20% of the stake.

Does this contradict the 99% RTP? No, the 99% is the long-run average and our math confirms it (98.98%). It’s just delivered through rare big hits, not steady wins.

How the numbers on this page were produced
P(bin k) = C(n,k) / 2^n

Bin probabilities are the exact binomial distribution for n rows of fair left-right splits: P(bin k) = n choose k, divided by 2 to the power n. For the 16-row board the outer bin is 1 in 65,536 per side. Verified against a 2,000,000-drop simulation, chi-square consistent.
