Is online roulette rigged? What you can verify (2026)

2.70%What a European wheel keeps by arithmetic aloneDERIVED · computed, not sampled

At a licensed operator there is no credible evidence of rigged roulette, and the plain reason is that rigging would be pointless: the wheel already keeps 2.70% of everything staked on a European table, by arithmetic, forever. That is the honest answer. The useful answer is what you can actually check, and what you cannot.

What would a rigged roulette game actually be?

A rigged roulette game would need outcomes that do not match the wheel: a live table whose ball is steered, or a software table whose random number generator is weighted away from uniform. Both are detectable and both are what testing houses look for, on a game that is already profitable without them.

The house edge is not a hidden mechanism. It is the visible gap between 37 pockets and a 35 to 1 payout, published in the rules of every table.

How is online roulette audited?

Both types are licensed, but the object under test is different in each.

This matters because the reassurance is different. On a live table you are watching the randomising device. On an RNG table you are trusting a certificate, which is exactly the trade a crash or dice player avoids by using a provably fair hash.

Can a roulette spin be provably fair?

A live-dealer roulette table has no provably fair verification, and neither do the RNG roulette tables the big live studios supply. What you can verify there is a certificate, not a spin. The exception is an in-house crypto-casino original: Stake, for instance, publishes Roulette as a Stake Original marked provably fair at 97.30% RTP and a 2.70% edge (read on their game page, 14 August 2026), where the result is recomputed by the player from the server seed, the client seed and the nonce exactly as in Dice or Limbo. So the honest rule is the reverse of the one usually printed: assume no verification unless the table is an original that publishes a seed pair, and never assume it for a live table.

What should I check before playing roulette?

The first is the licence. Find the regulator named in the footer and look up the operator on that regulator’s own register rather than trusting the badge image.

The second is the wheel. Count the green pockets before you bet. A table sold as European with two greens is a bigger real cost than any rigging story: 2.56 percentage points of return.

The third is the paytable. Confirm a straight-up bet pays 35 to 1 and even-money bets pay 1 to 1. Reduced payouts are the mechanism behind multiplier variants; on the tables we have opened the reduced payout is stated in the game rules, which is where to look before betting.

The fourth is the withdrawal terms. Payout delays and bonus conditions are what casino complaint databases fill up with, far more than disputed spin results.

Why does red come up six times in a row?

Each spin is independent, so runs happen far more often than intuition allows. On a European wheel, red appearing six times in a row has a probability of (18/37)^6, which is about 1.33%: roughly once in every 75 sequences of six spins. Sit at a table for an evening and you will see several. A wheel with no memory produces exactly this, and a player watching for patterns will always find some.

The same reasoning explains why the gambler’s fallacy costs money. Black being due after a run of reds is not a property of the wheel, it is a property of the person watching it.

What happened at Monte Carlo in 1913?

On 18 August 1913 a wheel at the Monte Carlo Casino is reported to have landed black twenty-six times in succession. Players lost heavily betting on red, on the reasoning that red had become overdue. The sequence itself has a probability of about 7.3 in a billion, roughly one in 137 million, which is what makes it memorable; the money lost was not lost to the sequence but to the belief that a wheel keeps track. It does not. After twenty-six blacks the next spin is still 18 in 37 for red on a single-zero wheel, exactly as it was before the first one.

Quick answers

Is online roulette rigged? No credible evidence supports it at licensed operators, and the built-in house edge of 2.70% on a European wheel makes it unnecessary.

Can I verify a roulette spin myself? Not on a live-dealer table or on a studio RNG table. You can on an in-house provably fair original such as Stake Roulette, where the spin is recomputed from the server seed, client seed and nonce.

Is live roulette safer than RNG roulette? Neither is safer, they are verified differently. Live shows you the physical wheel, RNG relies on a testing laboratory certificate.

What should I check instead? The regulator register, the number of green pockets, the payout table, and the withdrawal terms.

How the numbers on this page were produced
RTP = payout including stake x pockets covered / total pockets

Nothing on this page is taken from a source. Every figure is arithmetic from the wheel and the published paytable: a European wheel has 37 pockets and pays a straight-up winner 36 units including the stake, so the return is 36/37. The American figures use 38 pockets, the French even-money figure adds the half-stake refund on zero. Any reader can recompute all of them.
