98.59%Craps pass line RTPDERIVED · computed, not sampled

The pass line returns 98.59% and the free odds bet behind it returns exactly 100%. Everything else on a craps table is worse, down to 83.33% on any seven. Every figure below is computed from the 36 outcomes of two dice, so each one can be rechecked with a pen.

Formula: win = P(7 or 11) + sum P(point) x P(point before 7) · Source: Derived from the 36 outcomes of two dice, each point resolved against a seven · Last verified 14 Aug 2026

The free odds bet is the only bet in a casino with no house edge at all, and it is the reason craps rewards knowing the table. It cannot be made on its own: it rides behind a line bet that does carry an edge, so what a maximum-odds player really achieves is diluting 1.41% across a larger total stake.

What do craps place bets return?

Place betPaysHouse edgeRTP
6 or 87:61.52%98.48%
5 or 97:54.00%96.00%
4 or 109:56.67%93.33%
Each computed as the chance the point repeats before a seven, against the posted payout.

Place 6 costs 1.52% and place 4 costs 6.67%. That is the same game, the same table and the same dealer, at four times the price. Nothing on the felt tells a new player this.

Which craps bets should you avoid?

Any seven4:116.67%83.33%
The two field rows are the same bet at two payouts. Reading the 12 before betting doubles or halves the cost.

Any seven is the worst bet on a standard craps layout: the seven appears once in six rolls and pays four to one, so the house keeps a sixth of every unit staked. It sits in the middle of the table in large letters.

Quick answers

What is the best bet in craps? The free odds bet behind a line bet, at exactly 0% house edge. Of the bets you can make on their own, don’t pass at 1.36% and pass line at 1.41%.

What is the RTP of the pass line? 98.59%, a house edge of 1.41%. It wins 49.29% of the time.

Which craps bets should be avoided? Any seven at 83.33%, the hardways at 88.89% and 90.91%, place 4 and 10 at 93.33%, and any field that pays only 2:1 on the 12.

Does the field bet favour the player? No. It covers seven of the eleven totals but the four it misses are the four most common, so it returns 97.22% at best.

How the numbers on this page were produced
RTP = payout including stake x pockets covered / total pockets

Nothing on this page is taken from a source. Every figure is arithmetic from the wheel and the published paytable: a European wheel has 37 pockets and pays a straight-up winner 36 units including the stake, so the return is 36/37. The American figures use 38 pockets, the French even-money figure adds the half-stake refund on zero. Any reader can recompute all of them.
